The Hebrides, Scotland and Bempton ( part three). Benbecula and Uists
Across to Benbecula on the ferry ( seeing Arctic Skua and Red Throated Diver on route).
Otters Edge campsite on Benbecula proved to be a good choice with a short walk to the beach, where Otters were distantly seen, waders scoured the shoreline ,mostly Dunlin and Oystercatcher, and Lapwings tried to drive us away from their young in the dunes..
We were delighted to have a White Tailed Eagle fly directly low over the van giving super views, and even better, at the campsite one of these magnificent birds would fly over and catch a Rabbit from one of the fields across the road from us, this would happen up to four times a day. We met with a nice couple in the van next to us ( from Switzerland and also a wildlife film maker and photographer) and to the great amusment of other campers ,every time the eagle approached we would both jump out of our vans and run across the site to try to photograph it,most people were well excited to see it overhead, usually with a Rabbit in its talons.
We visited a small cove ( St Peters Port ) where we saw Twite, nesting Starlings and Pied Wagtails plus a few Terns .
A drive up through the Uists on a very dull and damp day, went as far as Balranald where we saw a pair of Corncrake very briefly, and another of quite a few Short Eared Owls of the trip, but none coming quite close enough fro a decent photo. We were going to stay on North Uist but decided on another night at Benbecula for more Eagle action.
